In contemporary painting as I see it, it is fashionable to either produce intimate works of delicate rendering and perfect mimesis or to churn out the latest bold venture of contemporary painterly abstraction. As a painter I often feel pressured by the latter to move further outside the realm of representation. Regrettably I have no aesthetic ambition to do so.The art I make is not a physical manifesto in challenging the medium of paint but instead simply acts as a vessel for me to reflect on my own experiences through a personal lense.
This work represents a stream of consciousness, painted shortly after finding myself exploring the vast network of corridors and dilapidated halls of the old post office on hunter street. The historic site has been forgotten by the city and left to decay, only to be seen by vandals and sleepless youth searching for inspiration. The imagery depicted in this work parallels my feelings of disconnection from my peers - non linear, liminal and isolated.
