About the artwork:
This self-portrait aims to connect the audience to an otherworldly landscape. I have used encaustic to create a sense of depth in the image using beeswax and damar resin, building and scraping away layers to create an ethereal atmosphere. The abstract blur in the image is a representation of my brain injury and provides a sense of my world to the viewer. I have reimagined the myth of the shape-shifting Selkie to convey the feeling of being suspended between two worlds after my brain injury. This portrait represents the act of claiming what has been taken away. My composition is influenced by Tracey Moffat’s photo narratives based on film stills.
