About the artwork:

As an optometrist I see patients with colour vision deficiency on a daily basis as this condition affects 8% of men and 0.5% of women. The most common form is deuteranopia where sensitivity to green light is altered and reduced with green easily confused with warmer hues such as yellow, beige or pink. Deuteranomalous colour perception is often heavily dependent on hue saturation and thus varies significantly at different times of day. In this painting of an Australian landscape in the Upper Hunter Valley at midday I have referenced these visual effects to generate an altered interpretation of the environment. A border of pink spray paint points to the shift in hue and various layers with sgraffito and masking techniques hint at the presence of increased illumination and glare. Exploring atypical colour perception can enhance our appreciation of the variation of colour in nature and reveal unexpected beauty.
