“Easy oar” is the verbal instruction given by the cox for the crew to stop rowing. A collection of multicoloured oars obeying this command were at rest on the riverbank as I photographed the scene; I employed a long shutter speed and linear camera movement to give an abstracted and simplified view of these functional objects. The resultant image reflected the physical and emotional environment of the day; a sense of the glare of the sun and light scatter off the water were captured, along with a suggestion of the speed and the joy created by these vibrantly coloured oars. By highlighting hue and contrast over detail the appearance and meaning of everyday objects can be altered to show that interesting imagery and even beauty can be found in unexpected places.
