CURRENT EXHIBITION

Curated by Madeleine K. Snow &
Kar Mun Phoon

32 artists 2 curators over 9 months culminating in 1 exhibition, publication and launch party; whilst this is the didactics of the Mentorship program to quantify it is far more elusive than that. From my own perspective it has been a dialogue with a dynamic creative, an opportunity for experimentation and immeasurably expansive. The Mentorship Program facilitates connectings with a community of artists and creatives through Newcastle Art Space. For each collaboration, the Mentor/Mentee is bound in a duo, and the connection or disconnection, harmony or discord is determined by the pair. Overwhelmingly, curiosity, learning, collaboration, support, exchange, appreciation and connection have underpinned the experience. The artists are working across a range of disciplines, with established to emerging voices in a relatively short time frame. With this opportunity, Newcastle Art Space positions itself as a centre for emerging artists in the Hunter Region, a place where risks, experimentation and collaboration are actively encouraged. PUBLICATION

Art-making is a vulnerable process, and in exhibition-making, curation is a reverence to that practice. In the concept of this theme, TILT is a disruptor, hinging on the experimental. We asked artists to lean towards their similarities and documented the dichotomies. Moving away from the usual practice of recording works in a catalogue; we created this cross-sectional study of the program's trajectory to tilt in a different direction ourselves. This centring on the artistic process invites an engagement outside the exhibition to imagine the subliminal movements and shifts that take shape in artist's studios. I thank all the artists who have collaborated with us on this publication and indulged all our ideas and inquisitions into their practice. I also acknowledge Newcastle Art Space, who have faciliated this curatorial dialogue and trusted our vision. Kar Mun Phoon Curatorial Mentee
